How to Sponsor a Pharmacist on a 482 Visa (Employer Guide)

Pharmacies are among the employers who can sponsor overseas staff, and both Retail Pharmacist (ANZSCO 251513) and Hospital Pharmacist (251511) sit on the Core Skills Occupation List for the Skills in Demand (482) visa with no caveats. The catch is that sponsoring a pharmacist is a two-track project: the visa, handled by Home Affairs, and registration to practise, handled by the Pharmacy Board of Australia through Ahpra. Home Affairs puts it plainly: the two processes “are entirely separate and success in one does not automatically guarantee success in the other.”
This guide covers the pharmacist-specific angles. For the full employer process, see how to sponsor an overseas worker on a 482.
Track 1: registration with the Pharmacy Board (Ahpra)
An overseas-qualified pharmacist cannot work as a pharmacist in Australia until registered. For pharmacists from anywhere other than New Zealand, the Board’s route runs through the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC):
| Competency Stream | Knowledge Stream | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Graduated in Canada, Ireland, the UK or the USA and currently registered there | Graduated anywhere else (4 years’ full-time study if completed after 1 Jan 2006) |
| APC exam | CAOP® (Competency Assessment of Overseas Pharmacist) | OPRA® (Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment, formerly KAPS) |
| Board registration | Limited registration for a shorter, case-by-case period of supervised practice, then a registration assessment after at least 75% of hours | Provisional registration as an intern: minimum 1,575 supervised hours, intern training program, the Board’s written and oral examinations |
| Then | General registration | General registration |
| APC fees | Eligibility check A$810, exam A$2,100, Skills Assessment Outcome A$300 | Eligibility check A$810, exam A$2,245, Skills Assessment Outcome A$300 |
Both streams must meet the Board’s English language skills registration standard. APC aims to answer an eligibility check within 5 working days of complete documents (allow up to 4 weeks) and advises lodging at least 8 weeks before an exam registration closing date. New Zealand registered pharmacists use trans-Tasman mutual recognition instead.
What this means for the employer. The pharmacist you want to sponsor should ideally have passed the APC exam and have a clear path to provisional or limited registration before you lodge the nomination. Home Affairs requires evidence from the registration authority that the applicant “holds or will be able to meet” the registration requirements, and a visa granted to someone who then cannot register leaves you with a sponsored employee who cannot legally do the job.
Track 2: the 482 visa
For the Core Skills stream, Home Affairs requires the pharmacist to:
- be nominated in an occupation on the CSOL (Retail or Hospital Pharmacist qualifies; Industrial Pharmacist 251512 is also listed but is assessed by VETASSESS);
- be paid the annual market salary rate and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold (A$79,423 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026);
- have at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the last 5 years, full-time equivalent, not necessarily continuous; placements and internships can count;
- hold a relevant skills assessment if required for the occupation (the mandatory list names Trades Recognition Australia and VETASSESS occupations, so a pharmacist’s APC assessment is not mandatory for the 482, though Home Affairs can request one);
- provide the registration evidence described above;
- meet minimum English standards unless exempt, and health and character.
The visa is granted for up to 4 years and the charge is from A$4,015. The employer’s side is the same as for any 482: Standard Business Sponsorship, a nomination at the threshold and market rate with labour market testing, and the Skilling Australians Fund levy (A$1,200 or A$1,800 per year of the visa, paid upfront, never passed on). Our sponsorship cost calculator totals it.
Sequencing: the order that avoids a stranded hire
- Eligibility check with APC (A$810) and the exam booking, done by the pharmacist.
- APC exam (OPRA or CAOP) passed, and the Skills Assessment Outcome requested for the visa file.
- Employer sponsorship approved (or already held) and the position defined at or above the CSIT and market rate, with labour market testing completed.
- Nomination and visa lodged together, with the registration evidence from the Board or APC in the visa application.
- On arrival, provisional or limited registration granted and supervised practice begins; the pharmacy must be able to provide the required supervision and premises.
- General registration, then, after two years of full-time work on the 482, the 186 Temporary Residence Transition nomination for permanent residence.
Retail or hospital pharmacist?
Choose the ANZSCO code by the actual duties and setting. Community pharmacy roles are Retail Pharmacist (251513); hospital and health-service roles are Hospital Pharmacist (251511). Both are on the CSOL and assessed by APC, so the choice is about an accurate position description rather than eligibility. The 189 Skilled Independent visa is not an option for either, because neither is on the MLTSSL, but the state-nominated 190 and regional 491 and 494 are, which matters for regional pharmacies.
Is this general advice?
No. It is general information from Home Affairs, the Pharmacy Board of Australia and the Australian Pharmacy Council as read on 29 October 2026, and fees, hours and thresholds change. Registration decisions are the Board’s alone. A registered migration agent can confirm how the rules apply to your pharmacy and your candidate.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Australian pharmacy sponsor an overseas pharmacist on a 482 visa?
Yes. Retail Pharmacist (ANZSCO 251513) and Hospital Pharmacist (251511) are both on the Core Skills Occupation List for the 482 Core Skills stream and the 186 Direct Entry stream, with no caveats, and the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) is the assessing authority. The employer must be an approved Standard Business Sponsor, nominate the position at or above the Core Skills Income Threshold and the market rate, and the pharmacist must meet the visa criteria and be able to meet Pharmacy Board registration requirements.
Does the pharmacist need to be registered with Ahpra before the visa is granted?
The visa and registration are separate processes, and Home Affairs says success in one does not guarantee the other. For the 482 the applicant must provide evidence from the registration authority that they hold, or will be able to meet, the necessary registration requirements. In practice the pharmacist should have at least passed the APC exam and have a clear path to provisional or limited registration before the nomination is lodged, because they cannot practise as a pharmacist in Australia until the Pharmacy Board registers them.
What is the Australian Pharmacy Council skills assessment for migration?
APC issues a Skills Assessment Outcome that supports a visa application to Home Affairs. Pharmacists who graduated in Canada, Ireland, the UK or the USA and hold current registration there use the Competency Stream (eligibility check A$810, CAOP exam A$2,100, outcome A$300). Everyone else uses the Knowledge Stream (eligibility check A$810, OPRA exam A$2,245, outcome A$300). APC aims to answer an eligibility check within 5 working days of complete documents, allowing up to 4 weeks. Home Affairs, not APC, sets how long the outcome stays valid for a visa.
How does an overseas pharmacist get registered to practise in Australia?
Through the Pharmacy Board of Australia (via Ahpra). Pharmacists from countries other than New Zealand must pass an APC examination, then complete supervised practice assigned by the Board. Knowledge Stream candidates take provisional registration as an intern and complete the intern pathway, currently a minimum of 1,575 supervised hours plus the Board's written and oral examinations; Competency Stream candidates take limited registration for a shorter period of supervised practice set case by case, with a registration assessment after at least 75% of their hours. Both then apply for general registration. Every applicant must also meet the Board's English language skills standard. New Zealand registered pharmacists use trans-Tasman mutual recognition.
What experience does the pharmacist need for the 482?
At least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field within the last 5 years, on a full-time, part-time or casual basis equivalent to 12 months full time; it does not need to be continuous, and formal clinical or industry placements and internships can count. Minimum English standards also apply unless exempt.
Is a skills assessment mandatory for the 482 pharmacist visa?
Home Affairs' mandatory 482 skills assessment instrument covers occupations assessed by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS, so a pharmacist's APC assessment is not on the mandatory list; Home Affairs can still request one. It is a different thing from registration: the APC Skills Assessment Outcome is for the visa, the APC exam result is for Pharmacy Board registration, and the pharmacist will need the exam result in any case to work.
What does it cost the employer to sponsor a pharmacist?
Standard Business Sponsorship approval (about A$420, usually valid around five years), a nomination fee of about A$330 per position, and the Skilling Australians Fund levy of A$1,200 per year of the visa if annual turnover is under A$10 million or A$1,800 per year otherwise, paid upfront and never recovered from the pharmacist. The pharmacist's own visa charge is from A$4,015. The salary must be at least the Core Skills Income Threshold (A$79,423 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026) and the market rate for the role.
Can a sponsored pharmacist become a permanent resident?
Yes. After 2 years of full-time work with the sponsoring pharmacy on the 482, the pharmacist can usually be nominated for the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa through the Temporary Residence Transition stream, which does not require a fresh skills assessment. Alternatively, a pharmacist with a positive APC assessment and 3 years' experience can be nominated under the 186 Direct Entry stream straight away.
