Overview
The Subclass 407 Training visa lets people come to Australia to participate in workplace-based training. There are three streams: occupational training required for registration, occupational training to enhance skills, and capacity-building overseas training. The visa is valid for up to 2 years and requires an approved sponsor.
The 407 is the right pathway when your move to Australia is built around structured workplace training rather than ongoing skilled work. Getting the stream, the sponsor and the training plan to line up is what makes it work.
The three streams
The 407 has three streams: occupational training for registration (training or experience you need to register or be licensed in your occupation); occupational training to improve skills (workplace-based training in your current occupation or field of study); and capacity building overseas (structured programs that build capacity overseas). Choosing the correct stream up front shapes the whole application.
Sponsor and nomination
Every 407 needs an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor to nominate a structured training program with clear, documented learning outcomes. The sponsor’s approval and the nomination must match the stream and your background — a vague “on the job” plan won’t meet the requirement.
How long, and what you can do
The 407 is granted for up to 2 years, based on the length of the nominated program. Your work must relate to the training, and family members can be included. It doesn’t lead directly to permanent residence, but the Australian experience can support a later skilled or employer-sponsored application.
Who is eligible
- Be nominated for a training program by an approved temporary activities sponsor
- Meet the requirements of one of the three training streams
- Have at least 12 months of recent relevant work experience or study
- Have a genuine training need that cannot be met overseas
- Meet English, health, character and adequate funds requirements
