Overview

The Subclass 407 Training visa lets people come to Australia to take part in structured, workplace-based occupational training for up to 2 years. There are three streams: occupational training required for registration or licensing, occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation (at least 12 months' recent experience or study is needed), and occupational training for capacity building overseas. Every 407 needs an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor to nominate the training program, the trainee needs functional English, and the visa does not lead directly to permanent residence.

Which of the three streams fits?

The 407 has three streams: occupational training required for registration (training or experience you need to register or be licensed in your occupation, in Australia or at home); occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation (workplace-based training in an occupation you have worked or studied in for at least 12 months in the last 24); and occupational training for capacity building overseas (overseas-qualification placements, government-supported training or professional development). Choosing the correct stream up front shapes the whole application.

Who sponsors and nominates the training?

Every 407 needs an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor to nominate a structured training program with clear, documented learning outcomes, a timetable, a supervisor, and at least 30% structured training rather than productive work. The sponsor’s approval and the nomination must match the stream and your background — a vague “on the job” plan won’t meet the requirement. Trainees may be paid, but the pay must reflect training, not a substitute hire.

What English, funds and insurance do you need?

Functional English — for example IELTS overall 4.5 within the last 3 years — unless exempt. You must show funds to support yourself and any family, hold health insurance for the stay, and meet health and character requirements. The application charge is the current fee shown above.

How long, and what can you do afterwards?

The 407 is granted for up to 2 years, based on the length of the nominated program. Your work must relate to the training, and family members can be included. It doesn’t lead directly to permanent residence, but the Australian experience — and any professional registration you gain — can support a later 482 or state-nominated 190 or 491 application.

How much does the Subclass 407 visa cost?

The base application charge is A$535. An additional A$535 applies per applicant aged 18 or over. A A$700 subsequent temporary application charge can apply when applying in Australia. How do you apply for the Subclass 407 visa?

Identify your stream. Occupational training required for registration · occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation · or occupational training for capacity building overseas.
Find or become an approved sponsor. The Australian organisation must hold or apply for Temporary Activities Sponsor approval.
Nomination of the training program. The sponsor nominates a structured training program with clear learning outcomes, a timetable and a named supervisor; at least 30% of the program must be structured training.
Visa application. You lodge the visa with evidence of qualifications, experience, English and the training plan. The grant period matches the nominated program, up to 2 years.

Frequently asked questions

How is the 407 different from the 482 visa?

The 482 is for paid skilled work in an existing role, needs a business sponsor and a salary at or above the Core Skills Income Threshold, and leads to the permanent 186. The 407 is specifically for structured workplace training — the trainee can be paid, but the purpose must be learning, not filling a job — lasts up to 2 years and does not lead directly to permanent residence.

Can I work outside the training program on a 407?

Generally no — work must be directly related to the nominated training program. The nomination must show at least 30% of the time is structured training rather than productive work.

What English level do I need?

Functional English — for example an IELTS overall band of 4.5, or equivalent in another accepted test, taken within the last 3 years — unless you are exempt (for instance, a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Ireland, or qualifying English-medium study).

Does the 407 lead to permanent residence?

Not directly. However, the Australian experience and any registration gained on the 407 can support a later skilled or employer-sponsored application, such as the 482 or a state-nominated 190/491.

How long does the 407 last?

Up to 2 years. The exact period granted matches the length of the structured training program the sponsor nominates. A further 407 is possible only with a new nomination and a genuine ongoing training need.
