Working-holiday visas paused for 24 countries — and 2 more changes that matter
Two weeks, three moves you can actually act on. Here’s what changed in Australian migration — and exactly what to do about each.
01 · Work & Holiday (462) visa: paused for around 24 countries
On 16 August, Immigration Minister Tony Burke confirmed 462 visas are still being processed — just more slowly — after demand pushed most country caps to “paused.” China, India and Vietnam now run on a random ballot; Indonesia joins them later this year.
Why it matters: paused is not closed. A paused cap can reopen the same program year; a closed one doesn’t reopen until 2 July. Read that wrong and you wait a year for nothing — so check the Department’s country-caps page immediately before you lodge.

02 · Northern Territory: skilled nominations reopen — with 200 extra places
From 21 August the NT is open for 2026-27: 1,850 nominations (up from 1,650), including 1,000 for the Skilled Work Regional 491 (up from 800). But the bar moved — “full-time” now means at least 35 hours a week with an NT employer, remote work for an interstate employer generally won’t count, and NT graduates relying on job-search now need 12 months local residence (up from 6).
Why it matters: the NT is one of Australia’s friendlier 491 → permanent residence paths, and it just got bigger — but only if your job genuinely sits in the Territory.

03 · Graduate visa (485): the “study gap” rule just eased
The Department has confirmed that the “start your next course in the same or following year” guidance for using multiple courses toward the 485 study requirement is guidance, not a hard rule — a gap between courses doesn’t automatically disqualify you (graduate diplomas excepted).
Why it matters: plenty of graduates who studied across two courses with a break assumed they were out. Many aren’t — this quietly reopens the door.
