How visa charges work
- Base application charge — paid by the main applicant when lodging.
- Additional applicant charges — for each family member included, at a different rate for those aged 18+ and under 18.
- Subsequent temporary application charge — an extra charge for some temporary visas lodged in Australia.
- Charges are generally not refunded if the visa is refused, and they are usually indexed each 1 July.
- Employers sponsoring a worker pay further charges and the SAF levy — see what sponsorship costs a business.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an Australian visa cost in 2026–27?
It depends on the visa. A Visitor visa (600) applied for outside Australia costs A$250, a Student visa (500) A$2,500, a Skills in Demand visa (482) A$4,015, the skilled permanent visas (189/190/491) about A$6,135, and a Partner visa A$11,710. These are base application charges for the main applicant, from the official Home Affairs pricing table as checked on 7 October 2026.
How much is the Partner visa fee?
The base application charge for the Partner visa (onshore 820/801 or offshore 309/100) is A$11,710, plus A$5,860 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and A$2,935 for each child under 18. It is paid once and covers both stages.
What is the subsequent temporary application charge?
For some temporary visas, an extra charge (currently A$700 where it applies) is payable if you apply from inside Australia while holding certain temporary visas. The table shows it in the "Subsequent temporary" column for the visas it applies to.
Do employers pay extra when sponsoring a worker?
Yes. The visa application charge in this table is only one part. The sponsoring business also pays the Standard Business Sponsorship and nomination charges and the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy. See our employer sponsorship guide for the full cost breakdown.
What other costs should I budget for?
Besides the visa application charge, most applicants pay for health examinations (for example Bupa Medical Visa Services in Australia), police certificates, and, depending on the visa, skills assessments, English tests and certified translations.
